Copyright isn't as much of a type of legal service as it is the lifeblood of the music and art communities. Analysis of copyright laws is essential in so many stages of a musicians career
from knowing the copyright basics before you record (see my article on this topic here);
to understanding the royalties resulting from exploitation of your copyrights;
to understanding what you're giving up when signing a recording or publishing agreement;
and coming full circle with reclaiming your copyrights after 35 years from the day you granted them to someone else.
Copyright law is also essential when deciding (1) to cover an existing song, (2) obtaining clearance for sampling music (don't think you're in the clear when using less than [insert number here] seconds, that's not the test!).
Every contract a musician signs is going to have consequences relating to copyright law.
